Brentwood win Club of the Year at Annual Presentation Evening

Over 200 local tennis enthusiasts packed into the Platinum Suite at Bramall Lane on Friday to celebrate another fantastic year of tennis in the Sheffield & District LTA league.
President John McGleave welcomed everyone back to Bramall Lane for the second year. The league winners were presented with their championship trophies before moving on to the awards for Club and Coach of the Year and the May Medal.
Brentwood TC were awarded the prestigious Club of the Year after a very successful year. The club won four championship trophies this year, more than any other club. They also held a highly successful Dawn ‘til Dusk Tennis Festival in June, led by Head Coach Ben Howarth, which raised £4k towards a total of £8k towards Cavendish Cancer Care. The club has also continued to develop opportunities for people with disabilities as part of their coaching programme. Finally, Brentwood has made significant steps forward developing their facilities, including securing funding from Yorkshire LTA to resurface courts, upgrade the club house and install new floodlighting subject to securing planning permission. Jan Atkins who has been at the forefront of Brentwood's endeavours this year stepped up to collect the Club of the Year trophy.
The Coach of the Year was awarded to Andy Bell from Chesterfield LTC. Andy has made a huge contribution to tennis in the area over the last 12 months. Andy has overseen the development of learning disability tennis, deaf tennis and wheelchair tennis sessions at his club and has also worked with DSActive to provide sessions for people with downs syndrome. He has grown the number of people with disabilities participating in tennis by 120% in the last year alone.
Andy has also come up with the innovative idea of visiting residential care homes this year to provide inhabitants with the opportunity to experience an adapted version of tennis in a safe environment. In addition to this, he has been delivering a Schools Roadshow in Chesterfield in recent weeks and overall is a worthy winner of the Coach of the Year award.
The May Medal this year was jointly awarded to Mark Busby from Moorgate TC and Jo Muscroft from Beauchief TC for all their supporting junior tennis in the Sheffield and District and eeping the mini tennis leagues going.
Finally a new President’s Award was presented for the first year this year. The award has been introduced in memory of the late Dennis Webb, who made a massive contribution to tennis in the Sheffield and District over many years. Dennis’ wife Julie paid an emotional tribute to Dennis and then presented the award to Emily Busby and Josh Bows from Moorgate TC.
